Do you want to work in a salon, open your own salon, or even out on the road and visiting your clients in their own homes! So, to get you through the minefield, here are some top tips on getting into hairdressing.

Getting in that experience early on

If you’re still at school or college and you know Hairdressing is where you want to go with your career then we highly recommend speaking to your local salon and discussing the possibility of working there on your weekends. A Saturday job would allow you to see the inner workings of the salon and will let you to get to grips with everything behind the scenes that you wouldn’t usually see! Use this time to learn the basics of hairdressing, watch other stylists as they work and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Get your creative juices flowing and follow your favourite stylists and brands on social media. It’ll give you ideas and you’ll be able to keep up with all the latest trends and styles, which is important as a hair stylist as you’ll need to be able to recreate these styles for your clients once qualified.

Undertake an Apprenticeship

Getting paid while you learn?! An apprenticeship is a great pathway into hairdressing. It’s important to do your research into the right salon for you, making sure they can provide you with all the tools and education you will need to give yourself a solid foundation to get your career running.

College Courses and NVQs

As standard you’ll need at least NVQ Level 2 Qualification to work in a salon. This will give you the essentials skills you will need to work as a hairdresser. Apprenticeships are a great way into NVQs, so this is considered as a great place to start!

Ask for Advice

If you’re really not sure where to start or you just need some advice, don’t be afraid to pop into your local salon and speak to the team of stylists there. They will be able to advise you on where to start and what to do, and may even be able to offer you an Apprenticeship or Work Experience!
